The 2018/19 Premier League season is just around the corner and the English top-flight season will kick things off with the FA Community Shield clash between Chelsea and Manchester City.

City broke numerous records, including becoming the first Premier League team to reach 100 points, to win the 2017//18 season, while Chelsea didn’t let internal conflicts derail their FA Cup victory.

Chelsea take on Manchester City in the Community Shield clash on Sunday. In the run up to the match, both teams got welcomed news on the player front.

The annual curtain-raiser for English football’s top flight is almost upon us as FA Cup winners Chelsea and Premier League champions Manchester City meet at Wembley in the Community Shield.

It’s a contest that seldom reflects how the upcoming season will pan out; you have to go back to 2010 for the last time its victors went onto win the title.

Regardless, the Community Shield retains some semblance of excitement; with this year’s instalment marking the official unveiling of new Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri.

Pep Guardiola versus the former Napoli boss promises to be one of the most compelling duels of the 2018-19 season.

Their first meeting also has the potential involvement of Jorginho as an added subplot. The Italy international appeared on the brink of becoming City’s first summer recruit not too long ago, only to eventually follow his former Napoli boss to Stamford Bridge.

Maurizio Sarri will make his competitive bow as Chelsea head coach when the Blues take on Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday.

The Italian took over from compatriot Antonio Conte last month after nearly wrestling the Serie A title from Juventus with old club Napoli last season.

He could become the first Premier League manager since David Moyes in 2013 – in the same competition – to win a trophy in his first game.

Brazilian star Willian reported to training on Thursday, August 2 and joined Maurizio Sarri’s squad to get ready for the clash.

Chelsea’s newest addition, £50m former Napoli midfielder Jorginho, could make his English football debut on Sunday, having already featured prominently in pre-season.

Maurizio Sarri has indicated he will keep faith in Alvaro Morata with transfer target Gonzalo Higuain signing for AC Milan on Thursday.

England international Ruben Loftus-Cheek will be in contention to start having returned from full training while Willian has also returned to London following his post-World Cup break.

The Belgian trio of Eden Hazard, Michy Batshuayi and Thibaut Courtois are still absent however with N’Golo Kante and Olivier Giroud expected to return early next week.

Manchester City’s £60 million signing Riyad Mahrez, who recently hobbled off in the 3-2 friendly win over Bayern Munich and looked like he could miss the start of the season has been given the all-clear to return to training.

In a statement, the club said: ‘A scan today has revealed no significant damage, and he could be available for selection for this weekend’s Community Shield against Chelsea.’

Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling are the only players not to return to the group after the World Cup, with Guardiola planning to go on condition over quality.

Most of City’s World Cup stars returned to training this week with Sergio Aguero, Nicolas Otamendi, Ederson, Gabriel Jesus, Fernandinho, David Silva and Vincent Kompany among those available. Kevin de Bruyne is scheduled to return at the start of next week, with Raheem Sterling the only other major name still to return.

Probable Line Ups

Chelsea: Wilfredo Caballero, Ceaser Azpilicueta, David Luiz, Antonio Rudiger, Marcos Alonso, Jorginho, Cesc Fabregas, Ross Barkley, Pedro, Alvaro Morata, Hudson-Odoi

Manchester City: Ederson, Kyle Walker, Vincent Kompany, Nicolas Otamendi, Benjamin Mendy, David Silva, Fernandinho, Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, Sergio Aguero, Leroy Sane
